Impact Makers EBI Member Only Webinar - Six Numbers, One Clear Story
Thursday, October 8, 2026 (10:00 AM - 11:30 AM) (EDT)
Description
Most nonprofit board reports say too much and explain too little. The board skims a twelve-page packet, no one knows what to ask, and the risks that matter stay buried in the footnotes.
In this practical, fast-moving hour, Strategic Nonprofit Finance CEO Larry Bomback shares the six financial metrics he uses with organizations ranging from small community nonprofits to $100M+ institutions: Quick Ratio, Net Income vs. Net Cash, Coverage of Restrictions, Liquid Unrestricted Net Assets (LUNA), Days of Cash on Hand, and Board Giving as a % of Operating Budget. Then, rather than stopping at theory, we open the real audited financial statements of a small Florida nonprofit and find exactly where each number comes from on the balance sheet, the income statement, and the statement of cash flows.
You'll leave the session with a takeaway you can put to work at your very next board meeting: a one-page dashboard format built around a unified income statement — operating revenue above the line, restricted activity below it — with a cash flow reconciliation directly underneath, so your board sees income and cash together, at a glance.
What you'll learn:
- The six metrics every nonprofit board should see monthly, what each answers, how to calculate it, and appropriate benchmarks.
- How to read an audited financial statement with confidence, and where each metric lives in its core statements.
- Why an organization can post a surplus and still struggle to make payroll, and how to explain that gap to your board in plain English.
- How to present restricted activity “below the line” to create a unified income statement your board can actually read.
