About Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to approximately 800 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout Central Florida. Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank has distributed enough food for 81 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes. In addition, Second Harvest’s 16-week culinary training program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults. Department Overview

The Development and Volunteer Management group is a critical part of the Development team at Second Harvest. They play a key role in both the recruitment and the day to day function of our volunteer base to sort and package food for our clients. This also includes serving as a liaison with potential volunteer groups, and also overseeing volunteer warehouse operations such as inspection, acceptance, put-away to picking, packing and order assembly. This department organizes and schedules the various ongoing projects daily based on the needs of the organization.


Work Hours

Monday through Friday: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Some flexibility occasionally required for nights and weekends. Ability to travel throughout Brevard County and to the Orlando HQ as needed.


Job Summary

The Volunteer Lead, Brevard Branch will serve as an important ambassador, educator, and community connector within the Brevard County community, while also performing the role of coordinating the activities of volunteers engaged in the reclamation of donated products and assist in keeping records of the product handled. The Lead also ensures that volunteers follow procedures according to our Safe Food Handling Guidelines and that the warehouse environment provides a safe and favorable experience for volunteers and promotes the mission of the organization.


Job Responsibilities

  • Schedule and supervise volunteer shifts at the Brevard Branch location every week
  • Greet, provide orientation and work alongside volunteers during their shifts
  • Maintain records of volunteer hours
  • Process, sort, categorize, and package canned, dry food, fresh produce, and non-food and inspect for contamination, infestation, spoilage and expiration
  • Direct the movement of perishable and non- perishable food into the isolation
  • area for sorting/packaging
  • Use pallet jack to move products following established operational and safety procedures and regulations
  • Perform quality control functions, random audits and final check of boxes before product leaves the Salvage Area
  • Establish appropriate labeling to properly store and locate products; track product levels with Inventory Control Manager
  • Confer with Branch Director and staff to coordinate volunteer scheduling and ensure cleanliness of volunteer work areas
  • Proactively seek opportunities to engage the community with the mission of Second Harvest Food Bank’s Brevard Branch, and to encourage volunteering, fundraising and donations
  • Work with Volunteer Director to approve expenditures, maximize efficiency, and improve processes
  • Coordinate and oversee community food drives and food shows
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience Required

  • Strong oral and written communication skills including ability to speak publicly to large groups
  • Outgoing, friendly personality and demeanor; strong interpersonal skills
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Two years of experience in a professional, customer-facing job
  • Proficiency in MS Office (360)
  • Large scale project management
  • Certified Professional Food Manager (or must acquire within 60 days after hire)
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work in extreme temperature (hot and cold)
  • Ability to work with a highly diverse and rotating volunteer population
  • Ability to stay organized and manage time wisely

Desired Skills and/or Certifications

  • Self-starter
  • Volunteer management experience (VolunteerHub use preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in volunteer management, non profit management, public administration, or related field
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Brevard County resident
