About Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to approximately 800 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout Central Florida. Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a committed caring community, the food bank distributed enough food for 81 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes.

In addition, Second Harvest’s 16-week culinary training program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults. Second Harvest is distributing enough food to feed 66,000 people a day. To learn more about SHFBCF, visit www.FeedHopeNow.org.

Department Overview

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida’s (SHFB) guiding principle is that people facing hunger are at the center of all that we do. Our work to alleviate hunger is focused on increasing access to nutritious food and improving the diet quality of people experiencing hunger. SHFB recognizes that it has a central role to play in the health and wellness of the Central Florida community, where epidemic rates of chronic disease and skyrocketing healthcare costs make access to healthy food a critical factor for improved health.

SHFB’s ability to provide Medically Tailored Meals is possible thanks to our onsite Mercy Kitchen. The newly designed space features an expanded production kitchen, a cooler and freezer area, ample dry storage space, and six receiving and distribution bays to support our daily operations. The upgraded facility enabled SHFB to distribute over 6.5 million meals throughout the region during the pandemic, a 382% increase compared to our pre-pandemic distribution of 1.7 million meals annually. We also utilize the space to prepare meals for Orange County Head Start, 4C’s, local charter schools and medically tailored meals which serve as earned income revenue streams for SHFB
