Environmental Education Coordinator

Orlando Science Center is seeking an Environmental Education Coordinator. A basic understanding of a zoo/science center’s role in protecting wildlife and encouraging conservation is required. The Environmental Education Coordinator will lead a team of Environmental Education Facilitators, volunteers, and interns that oversee the conservation programming and animal exhibit education within the LIFE exhibit at Orlando Science Center. This position directs and oversees all program related activities within animal areas and includes supervising, coaching, and evaluating facilitation staff.  This is a full-time, benefitted, supervisory position that reports directly to the Curator of Conservation and Welfare. 

 Essential Functions

  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate daily educational programs as they relate to animal exhibits to promote OSC’s conservation education goals
  • Staff exhibit areas to provide OSC guests with exhibit guidelines and conservation messages
  • Present engaging, inclusive, interpretive public programs with and without live animals to diverse groups on a microphone.
  • Monitor the quality of environmental education programs for diverse groups including guests, field trips, camps and assess that programs are inclusive for all learners.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
 

  • Education: Associate degree in conservation biology, education, or related science field; A Bachelor’s degree in conservation biology, education, or related science field experience is preferred.   
  • Experience & Certifications: 
  • Basic understanding of a zoo/science center’s role in protecting wildlife and encouraging conservation
  • Applicants should possess the equivalent of 2 year’s experience in a zoo, aquarium, museum, park, or a similar facility including experience in the development and presentation of education programs.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office Software.
  • Consistently delivers outstanding customer experiences.

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, zoology, or related field.
  • 1 year of leadership experience in either a volunteer role or paid experience
  • Experience speaking in front of large audiences.
  • Willing and comfortable working in and around water
  • Must be highly motivated, organized, and demonstrate a willingness to adapt positively to corporate change.
  • Strong working knowledge of wildlife conservation challenges.
  • Experience developing conservation action initiatives and engaging community members


Supervisory Responsibility

This position is directly responsible for the hiring, training, and development of part time staff, interns, and volunteers.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position. 
  • Moves throughout the museum. 
  • Ascends/descends stairs throughout the museum.
  • Ascends/descends ladders or other equipment to perform various tasks.
  • Observes and reacts to the needs of guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Communicates and exchanges accurate information with guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners in a variety of formats including in-person, electronically, and over the phone.
  • Operates a computer and/or office equipment efficiently and accurately.
  • Manipulates and moves components weighing up to 50 pounds, including those that may be low to the ground or above eye level.
  • Occasionally works in outdoor environments.
  • Frequently works in indoor environments.
  • Kneeling and Crouching (frequently)
  • Ability to be on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Must be comfortable in and around water.
  • Must be comfortable working on slippery, uneven surfaces. 
  • Weight Levels – Lift, Push, Pull
  • Up to 50 pounds

Expected Hours of Work & Travel

Telecommuting
This position is required to be onsite 100% of the time.

Rate: $18.30-$19.30
