TITLE: Development Director

LOCATION: Remote 

SALARY BAND: $50,000 to 70,000 +benefits 

The Development Director role is responsible for leading fundraising efforts and assisting in board development for Oviedo Community News with a focus on developing individual, corporate, and foundation donors as well as increasing board member engagement and support by identifying, prospecting, cultivating and soliciting annual and major. The Development Director will manage their own portfolio and develop an annual work plan based on OCN’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Editor-in-chief/Publisher. 

 KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities): 

Donor Relationship Advancement

-Manage and maintain a portfolio of 200+ current donors and prospects.

-Identify new prospects to add to the portfolio.  

-Cultivate relationships with donors through board member introductions, engagement in operational programming (newsletters, articles) and one-on-one meetings

-Steward existing donors through frequent communication and relationship building to encourage increased future giving. 

-Orchestrate strategic major gift asks from donors using wealth screening results.   


Annual Plan and Goal

-Create and execute and annual development plan 

-Make direct, face-to-face solicitations as well as support board members with their solicitation to successfully meet a personal annual fundraising goal set on a yearly basis with the support of the board of directors. 


Major Gift Planning 

-Identify key stakeholders in portfolio and high-capacity prospects in the community to strategically cultivate, steward and ask for support.  

-Plan unique correspondence, engagement opportunities, appeals, individually tailored proposals and stewardship to secure investment from major gift prospects.  

-Create future actions in the CRM to track relationship development and progress and log all interactions.  


Assist with reader revenue campaigns 

-Establish major gifts to use as local match incentives for each of OCN’s four annual reader revenue campaigns. 

-Create a plan and theme for each campaign with the Editor-in-chief/Publisher. 

-Create and review email copy to use during each campaign. 

-Create design assets for each campaign, including house ads and email headers. 


Research, write and report on grant proposals 

-Use databases available to OCN to add to OCN’s base list of grant prospects. 

-Find local foundations to diversify and localize OCN’s grant pool 

 

Customer Relationship Management Platform Work

-Establish and utilize a CRM for OCN  

-Accurately input information in donor records to ensure important details are recorded in the system. 

-Thoroughly log all interactions with donors, community members, and vendors to show activity and plan for future actions. 

-Utilize the CRM, create and implement moves management plans for each major donor and prospect. 

Board Development

-Effectively manage and develop the board for effectiveness and performance.

-Responsible for board development activities including identification, recruitment, orientation, involvement, evaluation and recognition.


Organizational Advocacy & Community Engagement

-Meet with individual donors, corporations, foundations, and community leaders, to share Oviedo Community News’ message and articulate the need for funding support. 

-Actively represent the organization to include speaking engagements, attendance at community events and membership in appropriate organizations.


Operational Engagement 

-Engage with the OCN team to discuss programs, initiatives, and projects.

-Implement strategies to engage donors in the work being done at OCN. 

 

Team Communication and Collaboration 

-Share updates, express needs, collaborate on projects, help others when needed and where possible, include others on communications to shared relationships.   

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

-Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, preferably in nonprofit management or business

-Ability to conceptualize the organization’s mission and vision and to communicate that to others with passion and with desired results   

-Ability to motivate and inspire others to believe in the organization’s mission.

-Excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to facilitate large and small group presentations

-Excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to multitask and meet aggressive deadlines

-Ability to travel in coverage area (Greater Oviedo and Winter Springs) 

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED: 

-Experience with a news organization 

-Resides in county where position is located (Seminole) with knowledge of the donor base in that region

-Documented history of successful fundraising and board development

-Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors

-Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of major gifts, capital campaigns and planned giving
