Program Manager, Accounting Services

Job Summary

Position is responsible for oversight of a wide range of accounting functions, projects, staff and

resources. Coordinates financial programs and projects, ensures compliance with accounting

principles, processes and policies, grants requirements and leads budgeting, reporting and

audit-related activities. Bridges operational accounting duties and higher-level program and

project oversight.


Job Purpose

Position provides leadership and oversight for primary accounting functions, ensuring that

financial operations, reporting and compliance efforts align with organizational objectives and

regulatory standards. Role bridges day-to-day accounting operations and high-level program or

project management, driving process improvements, operational efficiency and strategic

financial planning. Ultimately, position ensures accounting services reliably support informed

decision-making, risk management, and continuous improvement in financial practices.


Key Accountabilities include function oversight and strategic support; financial reporting and budget management; compliance management and internal controls; records management and audit coordination; and team leadership and development.


Job Factors

Minimum Education Level Required:  Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other closely related field. A relevant Master’s degree is preferred.  Professional certification (CPA or CMA) or other relevant designation highly preferred.


Minimum Experience Level Required:  Minimum five years’ related professional accounting or finance experience, with at least 1-2 years in a managerial or supervisory role. Demonstrated experience leading accounting process improvement or systems implementation initiatives highly preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-- In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), financial regulations and audit practices.  Accounting experience in a nonprofit environment with grant management preferred.

-- Understanding of financial statement preparation, budgeting processes and compliance requirements, including tax law, reporting requirements and internal controls.

-- Strong project management and prioritization skills.

-- Advanced proficiency with computerized accounting systems, specialized software and spreadsheets such as Excel, QuickBooks, and data management tools.

-- Ability to analyze complex financial data, identify trends and translate findings into actionable recommendations.

-- Skilled in managing multiple accounting projects and programs, setting priorities and tracking progress; effectively prioritizing tasks in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment.

-- Leadership and team development skills including coaching, training and advising staff, fostering teamwork and maintaining high performance.

-- Capable of identifying weaknesses in accounting procedures and leading initiatives to optimize workflow or implement automation.

-- Exceptional written and verbal skills to convey financial concepts to stakeholders and prepare effective reports. Bilingual preferred.

-- Ensures accuracy and thoroughness in financial transactions, reconciliations and reporting. 

-- Superb planning, decision-making and project management skills and abilities.

-- Excellent conflict management, problem-solving and negotiation skills.

-- Ability to exercise professional discretion and independent judgment, applying ethical standards, logic and discretion in managing sensitive information and making decisions.

-- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with executives, auditors, staff and external agencies.
