Assistant Curator

General Description:

Under the supervision of the Chief Curator, the Assistant Curator helps to administer and oversee both touring Assistant and those organized in-house, as well as to initiate and manage special Museum projects. The Assistant Curator conducts scholarly research, procures museum loans, negotiates contracts, writes and edits publications and exhibition-related material. S/he also manages touring exhibition, acting as the key interface with the organizing institution. As well, the Assistant Curator acts as a Museum ambassador, building relationships with local, regional, national and international cultural community members and institutions. This requires that s/he is able to communicate and work effectively with not only the full Museum team but with Trustees, volunteers, artists, collectors, lenders and others in the museum community.


Specific Tasks:

Work with curatorial staff to plan and implement the department’s annual goals and objectives and strategic plan.

Identify and locate objects for exhibition, secure loans, prepare checklists and correspond with lenders.

Conduct research and writes catalog and exhibition-related text.

Coordinate and manage exhibitions traveling to the Museum from other institutions.

Prepare and manage exhibition schedules, budgets and contracts.

Work with editors, photographers, exhibition designers and graphic designers.

Develop grant proposals and funding reports in consultation with the Director, Curator and Development Department.

Work collaboratively with the Education Department on the development of exhibition-related programs and interpretive strategies.

Work closely with the Preparator and Registrar on the management and implementation of timelines and the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions and special projects.

Present lectures and docent talks and represents the Museum at public and private functions that further the Museum’s mission.

Support the Director, Curator and Development Department in their fund-raising efforts by working closely with grant writers.

Other duties as may be assigned.



Academic and Business Requirements:

Minimum B.A. in Art or Art History with five or more years of curatorial experience and project management.  Master’s degree preferred.

 

Specific Skills and Abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including other staff members, interns, volunteers and the general public.  Strong organizational skills and ability to work as part of a team of dedicated professionals. Think clearly, analyze problems and take or contribute to effective action. Handle sensitive and confidential assignments with tact and diplomacy. Ability to manage multi-layered, collaborative projects that serve a diverse range of audiences. Must be highly organized, detail oriented, able to handle and balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and changing environment. Experience in assisting with exhibition planning and execution with the ability to analyze, interpret and apply the principles of rigorous scholarship and sound management principles. Demonstrate proficiency in areas of budgetary preparation and fiscal management.  Demonstrate ability to efficiently develop and maintain a records management system.


Temperament:

Enjoys working with and caring for art objects. Strong interpersonal skills, meticulous, self-starter, able to work well under pressure and remain flexible. Ability to work with a wide variety of people to achieve the goals of the Museum.
