Advocacy Unlocked: Navigating Nonprofit Influence and Policy Engagement (Virtual)

This interactive workshop will help nonprofit leaders demystify common misperceptions about the role your nonprofit can and cannot play in efforts to inform and/or influence policies at the local, state and federal levels.
Workshop attendees will learn:
- Definitions and clarifications about advocacy, lobbying, and the difference between the two;
- The value of advocacy in the implementation of your mission;
- How to legally advocate and lobby for your organization, your mission, and your community;
- How to plan your advocacy efforts for different target audiences, including elected officials and the media;
- Practical tips on how to effectively advocate and lobby.
Cost: $68 Members, $136 Non-Members
*If you are part of either the in-person or virtual 2025 Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership cohort, this workshop may be used to fulfill either your Mission Delivery or Infrastructure elective requirement.
Instructor: Leah Donelan McDermott
Leah Donelan McDermott is the Program Director for Florida Nonprofit Alliance, where she oversees membership, communications, research, and program design. She has been working and volunteering in the nonprofit sector for more than 20 years. She specializes in helping organizations to meet their mission through training, leadership development, strategic thinking and planning, research and processes and procedures implementation. Leah conducts and facilitates trainings on various topics including board roles and responsibilities; board governance and engagement; advocacy; and trends in the nonprofit sector, among others.
