Getting to the Core of Nonprofit Management (In-Person)

Description

Every nonprofit organization has formal and informal structures, processes and/or policies that help guide their work. Some are legally required. Others are implemented in reaction to or out of necessity because of an incident, a crisis, a funding requirement, or even just because someone thought it would be a good idea.  But what are the core elements that are truly needed to help lay the foundation for a thriving nonprofit organization? Whether new to nonprofit work or a more seasoned professional, this discussion-oriented workshop will incorporate best practices, lessons learned, case studies and peer learning. Participants will gain a better understanding of the basic pillars necessary for any nonprofit’s survival and the strategic considerations that can help an organization shift from surviving to thriving.

Learning Objectives:

  • The foundational elements required of any nonprofit organization and the added-bonuses that can help better position them for greater impact;
  • The variety of ebbs and flows associated with a nonprofit’s evolution and the key priorities and threats to keep mind at each bend in the road;
  • The variety of ways nonprofits can hold themselves accountable for their work - both internally and externally;
  • And the real struggle between balancing mission vs margin and the distinctness of the nonprofit business model in of itself.

Instructor: Ann Hughes

Ann Hughes brings more than 25 years of nonprofit management, fundraising, marketing/public relations, strategic planning, and partnership development experience to her role as the Director of Educational Experiences with the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropic and Nonprofit Leadership.Ann was most recently the President & CEO of the Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania and had previously served as the Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania and in a variety of executive roles with Franklin & Marshall College, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania and Catholic Health Initiatives. Ann has a successful track record of leading organizations and helping them exceed operational and fiscal objectives while also cultivating key strategic partners.

Ann has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA and a Master of Science degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Outside of work, Ann enjoys road trips, reading and spending quality time with family and friends.
